Foil Blanket

‘Foil Blanket’

I experienced something I never wanted to experience……….. sleeping overnight in an airport!  I was at conference in Philadelphia and had a 9:30pm flight back in order to make it back for a luncheon in my mother’s name the next day at noon.  My flight kept kept getting delayed…..10:15pm, 10:45pm…..At 10:45pm it started storming….DEAR GOD, PLEASE DON’T LET ME MISS MY MOTHER’S LUNCHEON!!!  I asked the checkin folks if there was a flight in the morning I could take in case my flight was canceled.  Nope.  What about Indy or Cincy? None! By now I was nervous.  I pulled out my computer to see what came up.  I somehow found a flight to Indy that left out at 7:00am.  I booked it just in case. It’s now 12:30am and the monitor says my flight is delayed until 1:15am.  Delay means there is still a possibility.  I blink, look up again and in big red letters is says CANCELED!! Everyone hurries to reschedule their flight.  I’m 2nd in line and am told the first flight to SDF, Cincy or Indy is 9:30pm the next day.  What??  I half smiled, though, as I pulled out my online reservation for 1st thing in the morning.  (Phil, thanks for your help/advice from SDF)

The next plan of action was to find my spot to sleep.  I was given a small pillow and this aluminum foil type blanket.  I put my leg through the strap of my computer case, my arm through my purse strap, my hands held on to the carry-on bag and covered myself with the foil.  With each move, the cover crunched. As tired as I was, I didn’t sleep much.  My 7:00am flight was delayed due to different reasons and I arrived in Indy at 9:45am.  The Hertz rental car line had a long line of people and I watched each minute on the clock tick praying I’d make it back by noon. (I still had to stop by my house to change and get the awards) I became nervous and tears formed in my eyes.  I continued to pray to God to help me drive safely (but fast) back to Louisville…. and where there’s a will, there’s a way.  I walked into my mother’s luncheon at 12:10pm.  Better late than never. It was a wonderful turnout and a great luncheon.

There were a million and one reasons why I shouldn’t have made it to the luncheon.   I will admit that I did worry some, but I was persistent with a plan.    My faith definitely pulled me through.  Someone was definitely watching over me that day.

Personal Getaway

‘Personal Getaway’

Everyone should take a personal vacation….. by yourself!  I went to Scottsdale, AZ for a conference but arrived a day early to enjoy some ‘me time’.  The resort we stayed at was breathtaking.  I planned out my day doing things that I enjoy and find relaxing.  The day started with a three mile run (well maybe more of a run/walk) around the area.  I was able to enjoy the beautiful architecture and landscaping in the area.  Once I returned, I went to their gym and ‘pumped, pumped, pumped it up’. From there I changed clothes, threw on my bathing suit and headed toward the pool.  They had regular swimming pools, but they also had a lazy river.  This river floated around a path and people would float on an innertube around the entire area.  I reflected as I mozied around and enjoyed the sense of calmness that was around me.  By now it was only lunchtime so I ate a quick bite and took a short nap. At 3:00pm I arrived at the spa for a Rollerssage body massage that combines the elements of massage, heat and energy creating a balanced feeling of body, mind and spirit.  That was followed with a Smoothing Marine Body Masque.  I felt like a burrito – lathered with a masque and wrapped from shoulders to toes in foil.  Once it was washed off and the moisturizer applied my body was thanking me for existing.   My day ended walking a block to the outdoor shopping center.  Once I finished it was only 7:00pm AZ time (10pm our time) and I was exhausted.  I could barely stay awake to even find something to eat for dinner.  I ended the day with a new sense of being.  I was able to let go of some bad vibes around me.   I thought more about what I want to do in life and felt at peace.  If you have the time/funds to take a day for yourself…………. I say GO FOR IT!!!!

Skate or Socialize

“Skate or Socialize”

Please support our fundraiser for the KY Center for African American Heritage.  Even if you don’t skate, please stop by and come out so we can show the city our dedication to building the center.  (We can’t expect others to support the cause if we aren’t willing to make a stand ourselves!)

Click here to read the CJ article on the amount of funding still needed and the loan the center did not receive.

Click here to read “The Buzz” write-up on the event (thanks Angie Fenton)…Also listen to Magic101.3 Thursday at 11:45am (thanks JC White and Valerie Sickels) and watch WHAS (Ch. 4) News at Noon on Friday (thanks Renee Murphy) for information on the event!!!

I started thinking about how I learned about “our history”.  It definitely wasn’t from the history books.  I remember falling in love with the “Eyes On the Prize” video series and hearing stories of ‘the way it was’ from my relatives.  Their fights, struggles, beliefs and passions provide me tremendous freedom today.  BUT WHAT DO WE HAVE TODAY?  Are today’s youth really informed about our current contributions to society? Have they learned about Ed Hamilton, the incredibly talented sculptor from Louisville?  Do they know the contributions of Senator Georgia Powers?  Are they aware of the singers and actors that were born and raised here?  How will we enrich our future youth?

The KCAAH is more than just the past.  It will represent the present and our future.  Who knows what contributions each of us still has to make to our society as well!  Please join me this Friday at Treo Roller Rink.  Forward the information to your friends and colleagues!  Take some time to come and learn about the Center.   See how you can purchase a brick that will be permanently displayed at the KCAAH.  Come out and mix and mingle with others and meet some of the promoters in the area.  We know from our past that our numbers speak volumes.  I’ll be there from 6:00pm-1:30am.  Whether you skate, play cards or just relax – your presence will be appreciated.  Whether you stay for 10 minutes or 5 hours – your time will be valued.  Whether you donate $5 or $500 dollars – every dollar counts.

Happy Father’s Day

“Happy Father’s Day”

My father passed away when I was a senior in high school.  He was one of the most creative, intelligent and artistic people I knew.  My father was actually the one who cooked most of the meals, made my Halloween costumes and helped me with class projects.  He even built a balance beam made of wood in the backyard so I could practice my gymnastics.  His big passion was trains!

When my parents passed away, I moved into the house where I grew up.  Still today in the basement is the train you see in the picture.  This train is over 6 feet long and my father created every piece of it.  I remember when I was younger my friends would come over and think it was the coolest thing.  I, too,  still think its cool every time I look at it, I just don’t know what to do with.

Whether living or dead, I hope everyone takes the time this weekend to reflect on a special memory/time you had with your father.  I sure miss mine.

Desserts

“Desserts”

A friend of mine had been bragging about this dessert at a restaurant on Bardstown Rd.  We tried to order it during the week, but were told it is only served on the weekend.  My friend has his kids for the weekend so he offered the following proposal – “I really want you to try the dessert this weekend.  Why don’t you and your friends go up there on Friday night and each of you order the dessert.  I’ll go up there in advance and pay for the them.  Once you’ve tasted it and fallen in love with it, give me a call.”

So my crew and I all ordered a white chocolate mousse dessert and were impressed.  We laughed the entire time we were there.  I learned two things that night.  Thing 1: nice guys are still alive and well.  Thing 2: women + chocolate + cute dresses – money needed = people staring at you in a restaurant.

(Brian deserves two weeks in a row!)

Brian McKnight

Brian McKnight

“Brian McKnight”

To Robin Hicks:  Thanks for all you do.  You are truly a gem!!

The Brian McKnight concert was simply wonderful.  I felt a little bad for the men in the audience because Brian was performing for all the ladies in the house.  (Although I can’t prove it….I’m almost positive that Brian was singing directly to me at one time!)

Summer is here…Kids are out of school…  Teachers are able to breathe again… Cute clothes are back.  Stay tuned to OnyxLouisville where you’ll find all the happenings (and possibly win tickets too!)

Thanks also for the birthday wishes. The Onyx readers have hearts full of gold!!
